Terms of Service
Last updated: 12 April 2026
These terms ("Terms") govern your use of vatverify, a VAT validation API service operated by Miguel Guelbenzu ("we", "us"). By creating an account or using the API, you agree to these Terms.
1. The service
vatverify is a REST API that validates VAT numbers issued in the European Union, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and Norway, by forwarding queries to the relevant government registry and returning a normalised response. The list of supported countries, endpoints, and data shapes is documented at docs.vatverify.dev.
2. Accounts and API keys
You are responsible for keeping your API keys secret. Any traffic authenticated with your key is attributed to your account. Notify us at security@vatverify.dev immediately if you suspect a key has been compromised — we will revoke it within a minute.
3. Plans, quotas, and billing
Each plan includes a monthly validation quota that resets on the first day of each calendar month (UTC). Overages on paid plans are billed per request at the PAYG rate in effect at the time of the request. Subscriptions renew monthly unless cancelled. You may cancel at any time; access continues through the end of the paid period.
Paid plans may include access to additional premium endpoints documented in our developer reference. Requests to those endpoints from a plan that does not include them receive a 402 plan_required response.
4. Acceptable use
- Do not attempt to deanonymise individuals using VAT numbers or use the API for unlawful purposes.
- Do not attempt to bypass rate limits, create multiple accounts to circumvent quotas, or scrape the API to rebuild a VAT database.
- Do not use the API in ways that would violate the terms of the upstream government registries we rely on (VIES, HMRC, BFS, Brønnøysund).
We may suspend or terminate accounts that breach these rules, at our discretion. We will attempt to contact you before termination where reasonable.
5. Accuracy and availability
The data we return comes from government registries. We cache responses for performance but refresh them regularly. We do not warrant that results are always current, complete, or correct — the authoritative source is the upstream registry. Do not make legal or tax decisions solely based on our response; always cross-reference with your own records when the stakes are high.
We target high availability but do not guarantee it. If the service is unavailable, we are not liable for consequential losses.
6. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, our total liability to you for any claim relating to the service is limited to the greater of €50 or the amount you paid us in the 12 months preceding the claim. We are not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages including lost profits, lost revenue, or lost data.
7. Changes to these terms
We may update these Terms. If the changes are material, we will notify you by email at least 30 days before they take effect. Your continued use of the service after the effective date means you accept the new terms.
8. Governing law and contact
These Terms are governed by the laws of Spain. Disputes are subject to the jurisdiction of the Spanish courts, without prejudice to any mandatory consumer-protection rights you may have under the law of your country of residence.
